Different Journeys to Franchise Ownership

Different Journeys to Franchise Ownership

There is no single route to becoming a Safeclean franchise owner.

Some franchisees grow up around the family business before taking over the reins. Others spend years developing their technical expertise before deciding to invest in themselves. Some leave established careers in search of greater independence, flexibility and the opportunity to build something of their own.

What unites them all is a commitment to delivering exceptional service and the ambition to build a successful business.

In this feature, four Safeclean franchisees share the very different journeys that led them to franchise ownership. From continuing a family legacy and progressing from technician to owner, to making a complete career change, each story is unique, but together they demonstrate that there is no single route to success.

Carrying Forward a Legacy – Robin Vaal

For Robin Vaal, franchise ownership wasn't something he had planned from an early age.

Although he grew up around the family business, he initially chose a completely different career, completing an apprenticeship before spending eight years working as an Audi mechanic but he never really enjoyed it.

After travelling in 2010, Robin found himself asking the same question many people face: What next?

Around the same time, his father Richard was beginning to think about retirement. Rather than selling the business, he suggested Robin spend six months learning the trade to see whether it was the right fit.

Those six months became a career.

Robin joined the business in 2012, became a director in 2015 and officially took over in 2018. In doing so, he continued a legacy that stretches back even further, with Richard having purchased the business from David Lonsdale in 2004 after David had successfully operated it for more than 30 years.

Some of Robin's earliest memories are of Saturday mornings helping his dad prepare rugs for cleaning, moving the kitchen table, putting down protector sheets, learning about stain removal long before he realised those lessons would one day become part of his own career.

Throughout his time in the business, one principle has remained constant.

"Always be polite, professional and pay attention to the little details."

That reputation has been built over decades, with customers, local retailers and estate agents continuing to recommend the business year after year.

"Dad used to get called 'The Carpet Man'," Robin laughs. "Customers still ask about him today."

Whilst maintaining the high standards his father established, Robin has also embraced new ways of working, introducing social media and modern marketing to ensure the business continues to evolve while remaining true to its reputation.

His proudest achievement isn't a single award or milestone. It's maintaining the standards built over many years, navigating the challenges of COVID, consistently achieving demanding service levels, and continuing to grow the business whilst raising a young family.

Looking ahead, Robin's ambitions aren't measured purely by growth.

"My wife is away with work frequently, so my business gives me flexibility – it works for my family. I can do the school runs, support my children and still run a successful business. That balance is really important to me."

Continuing the Family Tradition – Sean Bent

Unlike Robin, Sean Bent never imagined he would one day own the family business.

"Most definitely not."

It's a refreshingly honest answer.

Growing up, Sean was always around Safeclean Thornlake. His earliest memories are of spending Saturday mornings and school holidays in the office with his mum, folding leaflets and stuffing envelopes with the famous £10 off vouchers.

When he wasn't helping in the office, he was keen to get out with the technicians.

One of the first major jobs he remembers working on was Harrow School - a memory that sparked an early appreciation for the industry.

As the years passed, life naturally moved on. Then, after the arrival of his daughter Orlah and with his father Richard ready to retire, the opportunity presented itself.

"It all just sort of fell into place and felt like the right direction to go in."

Taking over a business with more than forty years of history brings responsibility, but Sean has embraced the challenge.

One lesson from his dad stands above all others.

"Look after your regular, repeat and loyal customers and they'll look after you. They will be your bread and butter"

Those loyal customers remain at the heart of the business today.

Whilst continuing to deliver the same five-star service customers have come to expect, Sean has also introduced new ideas, particularly around social media and digital marketing, helping modernise the business while protecting the reputation his father worked so hard to build.

For Sean, taking over the business is about much more than simply running a company.

"I'm hugely proud of my dad and what he has achieved. It's an honour to continue the name and hopefully keep it going in our family for generations to come."

Since taking over, Sean is proud of how the business has settled into its next chapter.

"There have been bumps in the road, but I've tackled them head on. Every challenge has made me stronger and more confident, and now we're ready to grow."

From Technician to Franchise Owner – Paul Garcia

For Paul Garcia, franchise ownership wasn't about starting from scratch, it was about taking the next step.

Having spent almost a decade working as a Safeclean technician, Paul already understood the business, the customers and the standards expected. When the opportunity arose to purchase the Ilford franchise, it felt like a natural progression.

As Paul explains, it was "less like quitting my job to gamble and more like levelling up with a safety net."

That experience gave him confidence, but becoming a business owner still brought new challenges.

One of the biggest surprises was discovering how much he enjoyed running the business itself, not just carrying out the technical work.

Looking back, his biggest regret is simple.

"I waited too long."

Paul believes many technicians underestimate just how ready they already are.

"You're never 100% ready."

Since taking ownership, one particular moment has stayed with him.

A long-standing customer recognised him from his technician days and chose to continue using him because of the trust and relationship they had already built.

For Paul, that perfectly demonstrates what Safeclean is all about, building lasting relationships through excellent service.

"As a technician you're earning a wage. As an owner you're building something that's yours."

A Career Change That Paid Off – Elliott Hollyman

Not every Safeclean franchisee comes from within the industry.

Before joining Safeclean, Elliott Hollyman spent more than a decade working in retail, including eight years in management. Whilst successful in his career, he found himself looking for something different.

"I was looking for something I could be in complete control of and something I could call my own."

After being introduced to Safeclean by his friends Dad who owns a Safeclean franchise, Elliott saw an opportunity to combine his customer service experience with business ownership.

Making a career change wasn't without its challenges.

Leaving the familiarity of retail required confidence, commitment and a willingness to learn an entirely new industry.

Fortunately, many of the skills he'd developed over the years transferred naturally.

Managing people, solving problems, delivering excellent customer service and building relationships all proved invaluable as he established his own franchise.

Since joining the network, Elliott has gone on to build a successful business and has been recognised with a Business Development Award.

Perhaps most importantly, franchise ownership has given him something he had been searching for a greater sense of control over both his career and his future.

His advice to anyone considering franchising?

The first year requires hard work, but the rewards of building something for yourself make it worthwhile.

Every Journey is Different

Robin, Sean, Paul and Elliott all arrived at franchise ownership in very different ways.

One followed in his father's footsteps after travelling the world. Another unexpectedly found himself continuing a family business spanning more than forty years. One progressed from technician to business owner, while another left a successful retail career to build something entirely his own.

All with different experiences, different backgrounds and different motivations.

Yet every one of them shares the same commitment to delivering exceptional service, building strong customer relationships and creating a successful future for themselves and their families.

Their stories demonstrate that there is no single route into franchise ownership.

Whether you're looking to continue a family legacy, take the next step in your career or make a complete change, there are many different paths to success.

Jo Reynolds, Franchise Operations & Marketing Manager at Safeclean, added:

"Speaking to Robin, Sean, Paul and Elliott has been a real reminder that no two franchise journeys are the same. Each has come from a completely different background, but all four have built successful businesses by working hard, putting their customers first and embracing the support available within the network.

For anyone considering franchising, I hope these stories show that there isn't one 'right' path. Whether you're looking to continue a family business, take the next step in your career or simply build something of your own, there are many different routes to franchise ownership."

At Safeclean, every journey is unique, but every successful franchise starts with taking that first step.
